Codes of Practice

The Commission has the power under the Mental Health Act 2001 to develop codes of practice to guide those working in mental health services.

Section 33(3)(e) of the 2001 Act states that the Commission shall “prepare and review periodically, after consultation with such bodies as it considers appropriate, a code or codes of practice for the guidance of persons working in the mental health services”.

We have issued codes covering the following aspects of treatment and service provision since 1st November 2006:

We believe that following these codes of practice will help to protect the rights of service users, lead to greater service user empowerment and foster a culture of respect.
